ENGEL, Franz (1834—). A German traveler, born at Röbel, Mecklenburg-Schwerin. From 1857 to 1863 he made a tour through South America, accounts of which he published in the interesting and valuable volumes entitled Studien unter den Tropen Amerikas (2d ed. 1879), and Aus dem Pflanzerstaate Zulia (1881).
